Skimming and Scanning, Comprehension Checks, Annotating,
Determining the Main Idea, Drawing Inferences, Critical Evaluation

I know the skills that need to be taught; but, what's a good way to go about it?

The school where I teach follows the textbook without much imagination or creativity. I want to go beyond what the flock is doing? Any suggestions?

What do first-timers in college absolutely need to know before going to school? In hind sight, what information would have better assisted you? I'm teaching a class on applying to college and want to give students extra hints on things that they will need to know how to do or need to know for future reference. I know these fields are very unrelated, but i love music in all it's forms. Everything from in the studio with a band, to in the auditorium with a choir, to on stage in a musical. it's become a passion. the problem is i started very late in my musical career. i only have 2 real years of experience in ensembles. i couldn't fit music theory into my schedule though. i just feel like i got started to late and now i'm not prepared of music major auditions.
anyway, i've always loved computers and working with them and problem solving and coding. plus, i know computer programming is a growing field with decently high salaries.
so what i'd really love to do is combine them together and develop software for music and/or recording. like Finale, Cakewalk, Sonar, etc, etc. but is this really a realistic idea? will i end up wasting my time on a education in music?
ps: i have been accepted already to the schools of my choice for computer science, i'm just considering a dual major or minor in music.

There are growing concerns within our educational system where one must question. How competant are our teachers in the school systems? Do you think that the problem with incompetant teaching stems more from:

1.) Ineptness in subject matter
2.) Lack of personality
3.) Student Favoritsm
4.) Seniority
5.) Burn Out

The growing trend that I observed in my school district was that many teachers were often rewarded on the basis of seniority. The more years that you put into the system, the greater likelyhood that your school will keep you on the faculty. But how knowledgable are the teachers who have been on the payroll for 20-30 years at a high school or college? Why is it that college science professors all look to be about 80 years old and like to create exams that are almost impossible for students to pass? I think students should have the right to use teacher evaluation forms and that teachers should be given competancy tests to see how well they know their stuff.

I am having a hard time understanding my EFC of 1549. It was higher but I asked for them to review it for me because of loss of job. I am tring to go to school this summer at a local community college. The estimated tuition for a whole year is $2500-$3000. I didn't know if I will be responsible for the whole $1549 amount (as my part) in the summer since I didn't go in the fall and spring. If they apply all this to the summer session I won't be able to get any help. I will be able for F.A. starting in the fall since it is on a different tax year. I still have awhile (2weeks) before I receive my financial aid package letting me know whether I get any help. I am bitting my nails off- worried to death and would like some input.

Someone recently called me a flower child. He says because I am a vegetarian and I really try not to worry about anything. Why stress - it won't get you anywhere.
What is a good definition of a flower child? Do you think it was meant as an insult?

Islamophobes in my community continue to hold protests at the local elementary school concerning the State's approved textbook for 7th grade students. At issue is the textbook's depiction of Islam, which doesn't address their hot button issues. Specifically, they believe that the state has a responsibility to teach that Mohammed was a pedophilic, blood-thirsty, Jew-hating misogynist, and this - along with suicide bombings and public beheadings - is what Islam has to offer the world. Where the state has failed, they are there with their leaflets and signs, to make sure children are properly educated in their version of the truth.

While I'm not about to validate *that* message, the very real role Islamo Fascism plays in world affairs cannot be ignored interminably, so at what age does this subject get introduced?

Personally, I think they should take their protest to the state legislature, and keep their distance from the rest of us decent folk not spreading hatred.

This is a dicussion question for my music appreciation class and I am struggling to answer it please opinions are welcome to give me some idea on what to say, Thanks!
One of the books in the suggested resources is a fairly mystical book by 20th-century composer Cyril Scott. He thinks that cultures are a product of the music that preceded them; that music has the power to introduce a change in the way people in society think, feel, and act—even if they don’t hear it directly. What do you think about that? Many people think that music is a product of the culture it comes from. Is that true? Is the other also possible? When a pebble drops in the water, the ripples reach far beyond the place where the pebble was dropped. Do you think music can effect the environment like that? Could it have a negative as well as a positive effect?
