Visual Shock: A History of Art Controversies in American Culture
By Michael Kammen
EARLY 19TH CENTURY

or:
Memorialization intensified with the centennial of Washington's birth in 1832. Congress appropriated $5,000 in 1832 for a marble statue intended for the Capitol Rotunda. Horatio Greenhough's 20-ton seated figure was unveiled in 1841 to decidedly mixed reviews. The semi-nude, classically garbed depiction of George Washington was controversial, and eventually removed to the grounds, ending up at the Smithsonian in 1908. This work of art failed to satisfy the public's desire for a fitting national tribute in the nation's capital. .
