An avenue presumes that there are trees on its two sides, or at least on one side. A street is a generic term for all passages through which vehicles and people can pass to go from place to place.
There are streets which are called streets even if there be trees on both sides, and likewise there are so called avenues, even if there are no trees on either side!
Names sometimes can be deceptive, and so one needs to know what a place is called officially, and follow that practice, even if it be incorrect.

I don't think there is much difference really. A Street would usually be in a town or shopping area. I've looked at a map of my town and all of the "streets" have shops on, sometimes houses as well. A Drive generally seems to be in a residential area. There might be a corner shop but definitely has more houses. An Avenue is the only one I know for sure! Traditionally an Avenue was lined on both sides by trees. That doesn't always happen now. Again, it will be in a residential area. A Road can be anywhere and have anything on it. In my area there are Roads in the town with just shops and businesses, there are Roads in the housing estates (purely residential) and there are Roads with very little on them except the odd farm that connect villages together etc.

You use avenue when an address calls for it. For example I live on Royal Avenue.

Street is a more generic term for any thoroughfare as well as those called Streets (e.g. First Street).

According to the dictionary most avenues should be wide and tree-lined.

I don't know but if you know the full name of the area then you should know whether it is a street or avenue.

You don't have to worry about which one to use. You are not the person who decides. Just look at the road map and see what it says there.
