Flower Child - What does this mean?

Someone recently called me a flower child. He says because I am a vegetarian and I really try not to worry about anything. Why stress - it won't get you anywhere.
What is a good definition of a flower child? Do you think it was meant as an insult?

Only a hate monger would be offended by being called a flower child...In the 1960's the "hip" people were labeled"hippies" Not because they had long hair , or smoked pot , or promoted peace. They protested against war , discrimination , greed , and hate.I think flower child is a word to describe a child of mother nature , one who lives in peace and harmony with the world , protecting it from harm and making it a better place to live for all forms of life !!!

In the 1960s there were a lot of what is now known as hippies in lots of countries around the world they were known as flower children in those days because most of them either had flower tattoos or painted flowers on their bodies clothing even their vehicles they espoused free love & a lot of them smoked marijuarna & lived a very unusual lifestyle

It definitely comes from another era. Flower power, footies, bell-bottoms and beads. Watch the movie "Hair," or "Billy Jack," or listen to some of the music from the era to get a feel for it. Even more contemporary, "Dharma" from "Dharma and Greg." Flower children were usually pacifists (rather than peace activists), often vegetarian in a Hindu kind of all-life-is-sacred way, were often nudists, and believed in creating a peaceful, loving (not at all monogamous) society, usually in small communes. Basically anti-establishment, extremely liberal, children of the earth, and/or the progeny of same (the "love children"). As Cheech and Chong used to say, "peace, love, dove, and hari Krishna." It's not an insult... just meant to express that you have an unfettered, carefree, loving attitude... at the worst, that you are charmingly naive.

In the 60s, hippies were called "Flower Children." In that era, to be vegetarian, to "do your own thing," and to "go with the flow" were radical concepts. The "flower child" was because - in addition to a peace symbol and beads - wearing flowers (both women and men) expressed a solidarity with the counterculture. Peace, love, flowers.... I would accept it as a compliment!
