I have a BA in Psychology. I have absolutely NO LUCK in getting any type of job other than some other Joe Blow could get. AKA drive thru at McD's, bagger at grocery store, etc. So I applied for Financial Aid through FAFSA, and will be granted a student loan in the amount that I will need to obtain my Masters in counseling. With the Masters I will receive, I hope to get a job as a school counselor. What I am worried about is that after I am done with getting my Masters, that I will be in the same boat I am now, but have about $20,000 in student loans to pay off as well. ARGH!! Is it really even worth to further my education. I am really nervous.

I favour Cambridge as it has by far the longest list of Nobel prize winners and famous scientists. Although Oxford has a strong reputation for the arts, Cambridge can boast a lot of famous arts graduates too, including those who were in the Footlights and both universities are strong on philosophy. There also seems to be less town-gown rivalry at Cambridge. I haven't studied at either university by the way. I just wanted to dispel this myth some people outside of the UK have that Oxford is necessarily better, just because it features in a lot of films. I expect a lot of strong agreement/disagreement.

I have a college degree and masters degree- neither of which are in education. I have been working as a substitute teacher and want to teach full time. However, I can't afford to go back to school- I already have way too much debt! Does anyone know what state I could get easily get a teaching credential without a big hassel? I live in CA and it's a big ordeal to get a credential here. Also, the cost of living is so high that it's hard to get by on a teacher's salary. I have heard that there are states that don't even really require you to take any certification exams as long as you have a college degree. Any help would be appreciated!

The structure of our public education system (K through High School) has not changed much since my grandparents' time, yet the world is very different. I'd like to hear from educators and others on what the goal(s) of public ed should be. Is it to instill values common to good citizenship? Is it to provide everyone with a minimum common knowledge level? Is it to provide everyone with the capability to earn a living and be economically productive?

It seems to me that unless we first decide what the purpose of education should be, other questions about curriculum and the role of teachers and parents in their children's education will be left as directionless issue-based fodder.
