Everytime I search for java on the net all I find is that most people hate java. For a long while there I was believing it was bad. Now I'm taking a class in it. I find it pretty good. its easy to work with and it has a huge library. By easy I mean compare to C++. The only complaint is that some conventions are too long. exampe, System.out.println. I mean why couldn't it be just println? Anyways, what is so bad about java as a general purpose language?

Here is the specific homework question: "Compare and contrast abstract classes and interfaces. Why would you use an abstract class? Why would you use an interface?" My problem with this, is that I completely don't understand the concepts enough to compare or contrast them. I am looking for a concise answer but detail enough to understand this better.

Currently, all I know about abstract classes is that you make an abstract class to provide an appropriate superclass from which other classes can inherit and thus share a common design.

And all I know about interfaces is that they are useful for assigning common functionality to possibly unrelated classes so that objects of those unrelated classes can be processed polymorphically.

But I don't at all understand how these two things relate in a practical useful sense.

Thank you.

Is there a way to pop up a dialog in Cygwin (or Windows CMD) to take an input into an env. var.?

I'm looking for a low-hassle way for a novice user to start an XDMCP session to an arbitrary target via a clickable icon (no command line needed). My vision is of a batch or shell script that pops up a Windows dialog with simple input box, then the input gets stored in a variable that is used in the XWin call. Is this possible?
