Everytime I search for java on the net all I find is that most people hate java. For a long while there I was believing it was bad. Now I'm taking a class in it. I find it pretty good. its easy to work with and it has a huge library. By easy I mean compare to C++. The only complaint is that some conventions are too long. exampe, System.out.println. I mean why couldn't it be just println? Anyways, what is so bad about java as a general purpose language?

i do like java, and i think it's better than C# and C++ in the fact that it doesn't need a specific operating system (Windows),

but may be they're faster than it while working in the windows operating system

about the too long conventions:
as java is an object oriented programming language, so u can have more than an object, every one of them has its own "println", so u need to be more specific while calling such a method.
like: if u got 2 folders with the name "folder", then c:\folder\ isn't the same as d:\folder\

Most people on the internet anyway, I think are referring to java script, not actual java, blame Netscape for creating a god awful web-scripting language and naming it after a great programming language, java script by the way has nothing to do with java.

In my only experience with Java I found it to be neither robust nor stable.
