The choices on colors, typefaces, leading and spacing, element design, whitespace and margins all work together to guide the viewer's perception of the web site as a brand. For example, lots of whitespace and strong vertical design elements convey a high-end, sophisticated and well-established brand. Diagonal lines and curves, closely filled space, etc. can be used to appeal to less sophisticated individuals or to suggest a contemporary attitude. These are just two simple examples of course; the possibilities are endless. The choice of typeface specifically is a very important one. The subtle differences in serif shapes and character relationships very strongly influence our subconscious attitudes about the brands we associate those typefaces with.
