We I start up my computer i get this message: "Windows could not start because the file is missing or corrupt" I have a Windows XP operating system. The thing is that I do not have the repair disk, because the guy who sold it moved away and I don't think this is a genuine version. I have 5 old personal computers I have used over the years and am thinking about donating them to charity. I would like to completely wipe the hard drives clean, though, since they hold personal financial info and word files, etc. Since they are pretty old not, one is actually an old 386, I really don't know how to go about wiping them clean. I use both Ubuntu Linux and MS Windows. Linux has very few, if any non-contiguous files (files that are whole and not fragmented). But MS Windows seems to fragment files, even when there seems to be plenty of room to save them as whole (contiguous) files.

Anyone know why MS fragments so many files?

Is there a way to force MS to save files as contiguous files when there is room to do so?

Defrag is time consuming. I don't have to defrag is Linux.

i have a dell desktop, windows XP. it is a few years old, [white casing unlike the newer black ones]

well, it has about 50-60 gigs of free space but it is still very slow for gaming and even on IE,

[it is not my connection because i have an new dell and it runs fast on the same connections]
