Whilst waiting for a train at a station it is useful to see where the piles of sh*t and soggy bog roll is to identify in turn where the toilet (and hence carriage door) is likely to be when the train arrives -I do find this absolutely disgusting - and surely a health hazard. Why can’t the trains store it - or at least shut off the mechanism that dumps the dump onto the track whilst in a station

I'm about to take my learners permit test, but I'm afraid I might fail, and I was wondering if there was any waiting time. Thanks!

Usually,I had seen people complaining about travelling from zone 3 to zone 3 on the other side but that they will have to pay for both zone 1 & 2 which is not necessary if they are not coming out from the station on either zone 1 and 2.

If the trains are diesel/electric then surely they could have a pickup to collect electricity from the wire/third rail, where I live there is a railway line which for half of its way is diesel, but the other half is electric (it joins to an electric one) why doesn’t this train use both sources? (It’s the Uckfield – London Bridge Line). I have seen it on French, Dutch, German and Czech railways. Surely the cost of diesel is higher than electricity?

MIND THE GAP!!! And if you dont and drop your self in there; What happens? Once I was waiting for the train at Knightsbridge's Tube Station a friend of mine he accidentally drop his watch in the tracks. We where thinking how to get it out but it didnt seem easy. He was about to go and get it but i stopped him just in time and said no dont jumb maybe the tracks are electrified and kill yourself for that stupid watch. He didnt argue, so we left the watch in peace and we get into the train. I didnt really know about the tracks if they are charged with electricity or not but certainly i wouldnt want to find out that moment with my friend, but if not........? He stated that it was an expensive one!!!

For example the TGV is mostly high speed running on dedicated lines, but operates more like an airline, bypassing most towns and cities on route. But the German ICE consists of some high speed running on dedicated lines on the core routes and a lot on existing lines with a speed upgrade around the periphery. Its not as fast as the TGV but allows more places to be served. Which do you think would be better for the UK

Drive through Chicago so often, just curious about the logistics of all the railroads. It has to be the biggest rail center in the US.

There's an above-ground subway train system in Portland, OR called "the Max" and everything on it is automated. So what do the train conductors do on the Max? Their only function seems to get on the loud speaker to bark at people who want to get on the train who are wearing roller-blades, or to bark at people who are smoking on the "platform" where people wait for the train (the platform is outside in the howling wind, btw). They don't check tickets; that's the job of the yellow-jacketed asshole bitches with attitude problems from hell. So what is it that they do in their little closed-off compartment at the front of train, safely insulated from the real world? Keep in mind that this is a real hoity-toity job that one must work up to after being a bus driver in Portland, so one would think that there was a lot of skill involved with sitting there and using an authoritative voice on the speaker system, saying things like, "This train's not movin' 'til you take off those roller blades!"

I travel from London - Derby on the train at least every 3 weeks, even if I book a week in advance (this is the most I can) it still costs around £45.
Is there any way to get it cheaper? I know students/OAPs etc can get rail cards, but Im not a student, Im 28, not on benefits etc.
I dont wanna take the bus cos it takes too long.
Ive looked at various sites such a qjump.com and the trainline, but cant find any much cheaper.

There will certainly be a healthy competition between government and private operators. It might result in having most modern trains like in France, Germany, Japan etc.

I am going to be traveling by Amtrak this week. I have not done so in the past so I would like to know some things that I should expect. The duration estimate is about 45 hours, I'll be traveling via the Texas Eagle, Capitol Limited, & Pennsylvanian (on coach). Should I expect long train delays? Anything else that may help me would be nice. (Are the lounge cars normally crowded?-- can you spend as much time as you want in there?)-- (Do I get to choose my seat?)-- (Is it generally hot or cold on the upper floor?)

I tried to find the answer at the Southeastern Train website, but found nothing.

Does anyone know how much it is for a yearly rail ticket from Dartford to London? Is there any savings option? I'm an adult commuter, so I don't get a railcard.

Many thanks,
