There's a good chance my husband will be offered a job this evening w/ Union Pacific and I'm a little nervous. He just got out of the military and his only reason was he wanted to spend more time at home and with our son. This new job will require 8 days on and 6 days off. Those 8 days he could be gone anywhere from Oklahoma to California, from what I understand (assistant signal person). The pay is good but there's a lot of downfalls, it doesn't sound as good as they made it out to be.
Has anyone done this or know someone who has? Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

I would like to know how to provide power (electricity) on a railway signal lights along a road-crossing, when the nearest station is kilometers away? Do they lay coppercable from the station to do that? (the question also refers to the signal information)

Today it was revealed that billionaire investor Warren Buffet owns a large portion of BNSF. He also reportedly owns two more NA railroads, but isn't saying which. Which other railroads would be a good investment, strictly from a business point of view. What about a merger involving NS or CSX merging with another rail co.? Anyone care to guess what Buffet's other two companies are: Maybe CN Rail?

You've heard of people worrying about living close to trains, have you ever bought a house close to the tracks to be closer to the action? Does the railfan novelty wear off with time?

What is the cheapest way to get from gatewick and heathrow airport in London? I'm trying to get from Gatewick Airport to downtown and heard it would be cheapest to take an intra-transfer train between the airports and then buy a 7-day pass to get us around the rest of the week. Any suggestions?

I go to school at a college with train tracks running through it. Most of the trains are relatively fast, but there occasionally are slower ones. What is the best way to go about catching or hopping on a train?

It was in Europe I believe. And again to reiterate: The trains ran under the track. Thanks.

Not to sound cheap, but it's about $50 for an upgrade to business class - is it worth taking this over coach for Amtrak?

Boston to NYC to Pittsburgh - about 11 hours.
