A friend: They just bought a house, a one story house, and in back yard theres a 8 foot wall, before they bought the house, they couldnt see on the other side of the wall, they bought it friday, and Today was the first time a train went by! its only 15 feet away from the wall! It stuck above the 8 foot wall, its so loud, in the house you cant even hear the people talking, it was so shocking to see a train, kinda in your back yard! What can they do? Can they get better winodws?

I've seen a few places where people have openly ridiculed railfans (it seems to be worse in the UK where they make fun of "trainspotters"). What makes railfanning different from any other hobby? OK so it might not be as cool or typical as say watching football but its a good pastime. And railfans are doing a public service by keeping an eye on things. Why are they the butt of so many jokes?

I've asked a few questions here, and the answers have been great, but perhaps I should read some actual railroad site message boards. Is there one "prime" site that all the railfans go to share their info and ask questions? Thanks

I see these massively long trains and wonder if the length of a freight train is limited by the amount of force that a coupler can take? Is this a factor that limits the length of a train, and how often do these things fail? I've seen some really decrepit looking freight cars near the front of a long train and have wondered if they might be the "weak mechanical link". Thanks.

I've heard a story before of pennies placed on the railroad track shooting out like bullets and possibly killing someone. Has this ever actually happened? I remember the neighbors putting loads of pennies on the track as kids and I've never seen it happen. Also, is it against the law, apart from the trespassing factor? Is there an actual charge for it? Can it cause any real harm to equipment?

Why is it that railroads rip up track when they could simply leave it in case it needs to be used again in the future some time? I'm guessing that railroads (and industry) might be charged a tax on existing rail (is this standard across all of US and Canada?). Does the "salvage value" of the steel and ties make it worthwhile? Could a change in tax/heritage laws help curb this?
