I will hopefully be going on a train over the line this year, and was wondering what the Settle & Carlisle line is like, and if it's
quite easy to take photographs from inside a train whilst it travels over the line?

Would it be better to do so on an express train, or an ordinary Northern Rail service which stops at most stations along the way? I assume that 156's operate along the line, not 142s? If 142s do, I may avoid the line.

Does anyone know why Virgin Cross Country's 07:03 Birmingham to Preston, and 10:29 Preston to Plymouth aren't going to/from Glasgow, even though they did last year?
(I'm guessing, so VXC doesn't have to send out as many Voyagers from Central Rivers, and Polmadie?)

Thanks for your answers, as they may persuade me to go on a Virgin Voyager/Pendolino train, or local Northern train.

I know railroaders stay in a motel or use shuttle service to get back home. The caboose seems to make sense as a mobile motel and kitchen. What happened and when did it all end?

I've always been curious about the way I've seen coupling between cars in the UK and Europe. Am I correct that I have seen a "link and pin" coupler system? This has always been a dangerous type system, so with the bumpers in place, and a person in between the the equipment, how is the coupling safely achieved? Do what you refer to as "goods trains" have a different type of system, since they are coupled and uncoupled more often than passenger cars?

As far as the bumpers themselves, are they for slack control or another purpose? Are they spring loaded or hydraulic in nature?

OK. So it's more than one question. Can ya help me out?

I have often wondered how 2 trains avoid traveling on the same rail avoid colliding with each other. How do the appraoching trains, accidentally traveling on the same rail avoid this collision? With the frequent use of the railroad, why aren't there a higher occurence rate of collision?

I've heard that you can buy a train ticket that lets you travel on any trains in Europe for a month or so. A friend had the bright idea to travel on night trains and then spend the day at whichever place (or visa versa), so as not to have to pay for accommodation. We’d love to travel to Czechoslovakia… Was just wondering if any of you have had any experience or fantastic ideas?? :)

i looked up where the train station is in elyria and basically found out that the station is basically isolated. there is just a building where you wait for the train and 2 restrooms. and from the pic it look like it doesn't have a secure parking area you can leave your car. i would hate to arrive back to elyria 3 in the morning and have to walk who knows how many miles to get to my car or even worse, realize that my car was stolen while i was out of state, especially since i have to drive an hour to get home!!!! yikes!

I grew up close to a shortline , and I remember vividly the sound of the lashed up GP-7's and GP-9's that would pull big acid trains through town. You could hear the very distinctive "rumbling" sound of the diesels as they worked hard. I never hear that anymore with the ultra-modern diesels....they are almost silent. Can anyone relate to this, and do you know of any sites where I can find recordings (or videos) of old diesels (thanks)

the other day one of the engines of a passing train sounded really strange. it kinda sounded like a cars bass system turned up really loud. i was half asleep at the time but when i looked out the window there was no cars driving by. it was the train making the noise. in all my years living here i never heard a freight train make that kind of noise. what could've made it make that noise?
