The New South Wales Public Transport Commission is the busiest of the Australian railway systems. The first line in the state, a 14 mile line from Sydney to Parramatta, was finished in 1855 by the government that had taken over completion of the line from the original private company that undertook the initial construction. Another company, the Hunter River Railway, met a similar fate as investors found more lucrative returns elsewhere.

In 1914 expansion of the systems was going great guns, and the rail line to Brisbane was built subsequent to this time, but I cannot find an exact date. I think it was prior to 1932, however, with only the gage of track being changed beginning with that year.

First standard gauge (1435mm) railway was built in 1932.
