Sure, all the time. It's no big deal, millions of people do it every day.
To commute from their expensive city housing to their well-paying city job which lets them afford expensive city housing.
It's funny, among non-cityfolk there is an aversion to the subway, as if subways were frequented by some sort of ... you know... lowlife. Not hardly. Subway commuters often ride because traffic into the city is hideous, and PARKING in the city is even worse. Many spare themselves the $10k/year cost of car ownership, and spend that on better things like wardrobe, fine dining, etc.

Yup. It was smelly and hot. I'd much rather take a taxi. They can be smelly too but at least you can roll down the window and get some fresh air.

Often, in London. I used to travel to work by Underground, as we call it, every day. Glad I don't now, however, as it has become even more crowded and hot and unpleasant than in my days of using it.
