Hey. I'm writing a report in my History class on what effects the Railroads have on America today. Does anyone have any cool facts or good websites for me to find this out. We are talking about the late 1800's when the railroads first started. Thanks!

There might be some users here that have had that priveledge. I'm not that old, but I can certainly remember many more rail lines (esp. industrial spurs) when I was really young. It would have been cool to see steam in action, or the transistion to diesel.

Can anyone comment on how railfanning had changed over the years? I think it may be a bit more rosier lately (after years of overall decline)with all the massive locos and increased traffic/train length, and the sharing of foreign power. Whats your opinion on the current state of railfanning?

I was in a town the other day and strolling past a railroad crossing. I thought that something weird or bad was going to happen because all of these guys were standing around with walkie talkies and cameras. I asked one guy if something had happened and he said no they were "railroad-fans". he said they did this every weekend. The guyz seemed freindly enough, but wow were they incredibly weird. Sort of like my dad's ham radio buddies except with really bad hygiene.

Are train watchers mostly introverted middle aged guys? Some ladies strolled by, looked puzzled and then were giggling to themselves as they walked off-----obviously amused by these men. Are these guys married and have kids and everything? Is this some sort of club or gang or something for men who dont deal with women ?

Near Hamilton, Canada I saw a triple header freight on a CP track One of the engines was sky blue(turquoise?) on the front and side of the cab with an orange stripe (horizontal rectangle; maybe a logo) on the engine part It was far away and very grungy (disconiued scheme or defunct rail line?) I am pretty sure it was NOT a CSX locomotive. I see freight from all over the USA and Canada here, though. Any ideas??

If you had to buy shares of one of the above railroad companies which would you choose and why? CN had better operating ratios and is the larger company, but some would argue that CP has more room to grow and expand and also to improve (and may be more likely to be merged with a US rail) If you had to invest in either company which would you pick and why?
