They're pretty amazing.

The scanners of today are no longer necessarily in fixed locations, but are full portable, wireless, remotely programmable, and more.

They can store all kinds of data, including needed repairs, routing, disposition, yard location, the list goes on.

I just googled AEI scanner and there is tons of info out there. I must admit I have learned quite a bit in answering your question. Thanks for asking.

It depends.
On cars it is usually the car reporting marks, number and what side of the car the tag is on.
On locomotives the same information, plus some have "dynamic" tags that also report the amount of fuel in the tank. Other information can also be programmed, but fuel load is the most common.
