Few of you have heard of the DARPA challenge. What about taking the challenge onto the roads of America and see who can send an unmanned vehicle on a roadtrip across America. Do you think that can be done?

Generally, I've had answers along the lines of "Torque is the 'turning power' of the engine", but what does that mean? Why isn't the max 'turning power' of the engine at the point of max power?

If a given engine delivers max torque at say 3500 revs and max power at say 7000 revs, where would I want to keep the revs to get maximum acceleration? Why?

So far I have a 32valve V8 several transmissions to chose from and lots of tools and equipment.
I'm thinking these specs are a good start:
Fuel injected Turbo engine(Turbo's have full bypass so they can be turned off for fuel efficiency)
All wheel drive
All wheel independent suspension
Variable geometry aerodynamic body

I me very well versed in propulsion and transportation technology. In college I'm majoring in Art and Engineering. I'm very outside the box in thought.
Depending on how this question goes I will decide whether or not to make a website for the project.

I mean, it's just a stupid freakin' fad! I live in LA, the stupidest place in the universe to have an SUV, and they're all over the place. Why??? There's no parking, gas is super expensive, and it never snows. (Not to mention how dangerous they are for everyone ELSE on the road!) And yet, all these idiots were just buyin' 'em up, the bigger the better, because IT WAS A STUPID FAD! So now that gas is a million dollars a barrel, will people finally take their heads out of their asses and buy some normal-sized cars?
