Wow. I think you hit a nerve with some of the ignoramuses above. In my experience, guys who need to drive a huge car are making up for having a thumb-dick. It's so transparent, it's frightening!

SUV arent all that bad its just the idiot yuppies that never tow anything, or go off road, I've used a 1981 Blazer 350 to tow a boat and drive through a little area called the greenock swamp and this thing can be in the the swamp over it's fenderwells and keep going, the door seals are worn so it gets a bit wet though, but if you can get an old chevy blazer, gmc jimmy, ford bronco, or jeep TJ, you can have hours of fun over just about any terrain, just try not to get caught in other people's fields

So, what did people with kids, pets, and groceries drive before there were SUVs?
Minivans. How many minivan jokes have you heard? Plenty. There's nothing cool about driving a minivan, especially when you put it side-by-side with an SUV.
So, what did people with kids, pets, and groceries drive before there were minivans?
Station wagons...which were practical, affordable, and functional. But, now they don't make station wagons like they used to. Sometimes, when they do make station wagons, they don't call them station wagons (like the Dodge Magnum).
Before there were minivan jokes, there were station wagon jokes. Apparently, there haven't been SUV jokes yet.
If the manufacturers bring back well-designed station wagons capable of carrying the kids, pets, and groceries, I'm confident people will buy them. Wagons will be capable of better fuel economy and carry a lower sticker price, too.
I think we're past the time for station wagon jokes. There was a reason they were very good choices for a very long time. Station wagons make sense. Minivans did too. Honestly, when gas was cheaper, SUVs were okay too. People felt safe in them, and everyone wants to protect their family. I feel it was less of a fad than you may think. Everyone I know with SUVs has mentioned how safe they feel inside them, and how safe they feel with their kids in them, too. They are also comfortable on long trips, and when you've got kids in tow, that's important.
So, the solution, in my opinion, is to go back to well-designed fuel efficient stylish and safe station wagons, and I think the Dodge Magnum is a great example of what I'm talking about. If wagons come back, the SUVs could be replaced.

Well I agree with you to a certian extent, I used to drive a small car. I had one child. Now I am with someone else and at one time we may have 6 people in the car at one time. I got a SUV. They are safer than Vans. When it comes to an accident, you look after your family. SUV's are very safe. As for Gas prices, You pay on one end or the other, If you buy a hybrid, you pay more for the car upfront. If you get a normal car, you pay for it over time, ((buying gas).

While I do agree with some of your points.... does it really bother you that much? Apparently its not a fad because EVERYWHERE I go I see as many SUVs as regular cars. And its been that way for a few years. And they're still buying them. Whether or not they can afford gas is their business. Its all a matter of preference. They prefer SUVs and you don't.

people buy s.u.v.s or any other vehicle because it is the vehicle that suits THEIR needs ,THEIR desires ,and THEIR budgets. you obviously don't have the need , desire , or budget for an s.u..v. This is AMERICA. We have the right to buy and/or drive any number of vehicles. I happen to live in the Midwest & it does snow here. I also happen to sell vehicles. I try to help people figure out which vehicle fits their need , wants, budget, etc. What may seem like a "normal sized car" to you, might not work for the Mother of 5 kids , in the real estate biz, who week-ends at a campground in wisconsin. As for gas prices , thats a whole other question!!! {by the way I drive a Hybrid Escape & it does a great job of getting me to work ...even during a Chicago snow storm...it is also quite handy at carting home goods after a long day of shopping, lots of cargo space. & it gets great gas mileage. Its also fun to drive. and I havn't had any accidents in years. so I'll keep driving my oh-so-DANGEROUS S.U.V. & I'll keep selling whatever size, make, model, vehicles to whoever needs them.

I agree 100% with you..I live in the Bay Area, and it is the same deal. Yet these same idiots will fly an American flag or have "Support Our troops" stickers. Guzzle up that Arab oil/$, and proliferate our dependence on that s**t, you California fools (I am originally from NJ).
I'll stick with my 4 cylinder, 7 year old Jetta, still getting 28 miles per gallon, then go hybrid on my next ride, once the technology is more mature.

IMHO: people by SUVs for 3 primary reasons--
1) Guys with the mentality that 'bigger is better'; ie, there car is an extention of themselves.
2) "soccer moms" to haul teams & equipment to and fro.
3) lower and middle class by used SUVs [and vans & 'big cars']because they are usually priced cheaper.
