That's unfortunate that you feel this way about all unions. Some ARE actually protectiong their workers. They are getting raises and better benifits for employees.

At this point many unions (but not all) don't really have anything of value left to do. But no self-respecting union leader would go to his people and say, "OK we've done such a good job there isn't anything left for us to do. So, we're going to suspend the payment of dues and disband the union." So, they have to make trouble in order to justify their existance. If a worker pays dues and the union doesn't ever do anything, the workers won't want a union anymore so they don't have to pay dues.

I'm convinced that most unions do more harm than good these days but you don't get any union to agree with that, even if they bankrupt the company that employs them.

So, no, I don't think they will ever stop being greedy unless more companies do what Caterpiller did and "break" the union.

Unions main points protectionism from unsafe job practices and wage concerns are now being addressed in other ways. OSHA for safety. And most gov. jobs Davis Beacon Prevailing Wage, and that is not, contrary to popular belief, effected due to unions.
