Odd question, I know, but as far as formal ship etiquette goes, is it proper for the captain to disembark first, and the crew follow as a sign of respect? Or does the captain disembark last because he/she is expected to stay with the ship the longest?

I have a 350 mag with exhaust risers on it. I think they are clogging up and I was wondering if I could do away with the risers and go to just headers?

I'm going to purchase something like a Zuma 13' sailboat and want to learn how to really sail it. However all the lessons out here (long beach, ca) are all 'certification' courses and cost 500 - 700 dollars and you pretty much have to join their 'yacht' club... It seems like a little bit of overkill. Where can I learn to simply sail a dinghy in my bay without learning how to sail a 25' keel boat and learn navigation etc.. it seems like that should come later as I grow learning how to sail?

Is there an online source to get me started so I can just jump in and cruise around and experiment? I'm already reading a decent book.. What are the real advantages of spending that kind of money on a school at this stage?

On a canal boat, why do you have to keep the rudder at an angle to keep the boat in a straight line? Does it have something to do with the propellor?

I have a 1998 mercury 30hp outboard that had damage to the skegg & prop. A new skegg was welded on & the prop welded & balanced. It goes into forward & reverse easily. When you put it into reverse the prop doesn't move right or left, makes sense. When you put it in forward the prop doesn't turn to the left, makes sense. But it turns to the right & makes a clicking sound, doesn't make sense. There was no metal when I drained the lower end. I'm afraid to try to start it now because of the clicking sound & rotation of the prop to the right. I don't if there is some damage to the forward gear in the lower end. On my johnson motor the prop locks in gear & won't rotate either direction. Is something wrong with gears or is this normal for mecury motors? Shound I start it?

Unfortunately the boating season has come to an end and I need to get my boat winterized. I'll probably just take it into the shop, but I was wondering what processes need to be done to winterize a boat.

Is it simply opening drain plugs, or is there more to it than that?

I was looking into sailing lessons and was thinking of a Vanguard 15 or something similar. My question is about use.. How far can you really go in a boat this small? Up and down the coast? Also, can you use a small (2 hp) portable engine on something like this? Is it common or not?
