why is Uncle Sam penalizing ME for what my employer decides to do? Why should I have to pay a SINGLE CENT more in taxes whether I get paid every two weeks, or every year? Is the government so dumb as to think that what I get paid on a bi-weekly check is actually what I make every week? in other words if I make $500 a week and I get a check for $1,000 bi-weekly, Does the taxman think I am being paid $1,000 a week?!!!

I'm 17 right now and have a job.. however I heard if you make less than a certain amount, you don't have to file taxes for that year? Is this true and if so, what is that amount?

Just wondering whether it would be better to file taxes this year as a married couple or individually. Here is some info:

We both work full time, incomes of ~70k and ~50k
no kids
we rent, so no mortage deduction
live in CA, not sure if it matters

Any finance wizards out there? What are your thoughts?

My son's girlfriend who's 19 was recently kicked out of her home by her mother. She works as a manager for a local fast food and her mother is determined to make this girl's life miserable. The girl gives her mother her pay checks to pay bills, rent and food. I told son's girlfriend that since mother kicked her out she does NOT have to support her mother any longer. However, the mother is extremely abusive and has made quite a spetacal out of herself in front of the girl's co-workers so she continues to support her mom sending her pay checks to the woman.
I made a suggestion that she either get a checking account or start giving her mother money using money orders and keeping receipts in an envelope. Then at tax season, she could possibly count her mother as a "dependent"?
Is this possible? Does anyone know if this can be done or not? Otherwise it's simply not fair. She's living in 3 different places because she can't afford a home of her own.
Thanks for any suggestions!

We have a huge tax bill from a couple of years ago. We do not make nearly the amount of money we did back then. My hubby is a trader and we lost all the money we put a side for taxes because we had to live off it.
Is there anyway to settle with the IRS for a less amount? I do not want to be under them anymore and it seems we will never pay them off. At this point we don't even have the cash for the monthly installment payment.
All our savings are gone because we have not made anything in the last two years. He is working but we are just getting by.
We have sold everything we just about own to get us back on our feet.
This is not a sob story because I know we will get back on our feet but taking care of this IRS issue is one of the steps to getting us there.
So any info would be greatly appreciated! :)
Thanks!

I'm planning to enter a fitness contest and the winner receives a total of $50,000 in prizes which includes $40,000 cash, fitness equipment, and health supplements. Do the taxes have to be paid by the winner upfront, are they taken out of the prize money, or are the taxes paid at the end of the year? I may not be able to afford to even win the contest. LOL Too funny.
