We had put our son into a daycare last year of March throughout the year but we were paying the daycare lady with personal checks. We once wrote out a check payable to her daycare but she was quick to ask us to re-write the check in her name. Well, here it is 2007, TAX TIME, and we had to request her tax info for filing purposes. First off, she completely ignores us and will not provide us with the EIN / SSN number (thats okay, we already reported it to the IRS) and we got copies of the checks (front and back) that we issued to her and she's made every single check payable to her sister. Do you think she is evading taxes by having her sister cash the check for her so she doesn't have to report income? Yes, yes, she may not have a checking account, but not giving someone your EIN/SSN for taxes (she COULD be tax-exempt but she still has to provide the information), ignoring phone calls/emails AND certfied letters..now this? What do you think??

My mom setup a UGMA account a long time ago. She only put in $500 into it and today it's worth $2300. Actually its been fluctuating the past three years. At the end of one year, it was worth $2200. The following year, $1900, and the end of last year $2300. I'm now 24 years old and I'm entitled to use the funds for any purpose. I'm not sure how taxes work in UGMA accounts. I think you pay taxes on it every year on any earnings. I don't think they grow tax-deferred. Is my information correct?

If I withdraw funds from it, will I pay any income taxes on it?

We adopted 2 animals this year through a 501C3 organization. I have heard that animal adoption is considered a donation and is tax deductible. I have also heard that since I walked away with something in return for my money, there is no tax break there. Can anyone give me the correct answer? Thanks.

I'm just wondering if anyone's completed the 2006 VITA/TCE Form 274 Volunteer Assistor's Test recently. This is the first year I've volunteered, and a lot of it seems over whelming. Just looking to see how many peope's attempted it, and if they'd be able to provide assistance on a couple questions.

Hey guys,

I have been taking care of my 81 year old grandmother for about 5 years now and have never claimed her. She is a United States citizen; unemployeed; recieving SSI; food stamps and living with me in rental subsidized housing.

Many of her expenses are covered by the state, but many other expenses aren't. I take her to all her doctor's appointments; purchase food for her that isn't covered by her food stamps; pay the phone bill; pay the cable bill and many other miscellaneous costs.

Although money doesn't come out of my pocket all the time to take care of her, she is blind and deaf, which requires me to do absolutely everything for her, including giving medication; washing her clothes; folding her clothes; cleaning after her; doing all her shopping; her cooking and changing her diapers.

I'm having a hard time grasping the 50% issue because in my opinion, I spend a lot of time taking care of her and a whole lot of gas money, plus the other expenses listed.

How does turbotax work?

Can you see how much your refund will be before you pay for their services?

Can you get the 1 day loan? RAL loan like Jackson Hewitt does?

Are the questions simple?

How long does the check take to come back?

I took 20,000 out of my mutual funds this year so I know I will have to pay taxes on it. This amount basically doubles what I made in a year...will I get put in a higher tax bracket? Or are the taxes you pay on something like that different from income from working? I'm just trying to get a feel for how much I might owe.

She's sold about $30 worth of items in 2006, (none in the state of NY where we live, so she doesn't even have to pay tax on those sales..right?) Yet we have lots of expenses we go through for this "home business" that she's started, (heat, electric, phone, etc..)
she keeps all the transactions seperate by using (paypal). so i shouldn't have a problem filing a schedule C right?? My buddies keep telling me that the law doesn't state that you "have to make money", but i feel weird stating that we only made 30 bucks and yet deduct a couple hundred in expenses...

what do you think??

I have an option to add value by setting up a home business with my family. My brother and his wife own the house, purdhased land and are clearing and setting up a Horse farm on 15-acres. My brother is retired from the US Navy and receives his retirement income and he works on an off shore supply ship and there is cash flow and stabilty.
There is no business license or plan as I have been suggesting to use the tax system and structure advantageously. I plan to set-up trade and product options after 14-years in SE Asia--Would it be wise to set up a LLC or a limited partnership? Is there available Horse Farm and Ag grants for the State of Florida?
I am seaching for some basic guidance so that our hard work and investment operates efficiently and advantageously...and solid tax and business planning.

Can you recommend some avenues or business sources and options that would provide answers and support ?
