We adopted 2 animals this year through a 501C3 organization. I have heard that animal adoption is considered a donation and is tax deductible. I have also heard that since I walked away with something in return for my money, there is no tax break there. Can anyone give me the correct answer? Thanks.

My understanding is that the adoption fees are not tax deductable. Any donation to the shelter on top of that is.

You paid the adoption fee, got a pet - no deduction. If you gave them a contribution but did NOT get anything for it, then that would be deductible.

you cannot deduct the adoption fees. you can deduct any separate donations.
