Our brand new home had a plumbing leak and damaged carpets, stained furniture. The builder is compensating us for damages but the letter refers to it as "Settlement amount" rather than a reimbursement for damages. Will this become taxable?

I have a child from a previous relationship. Can we file jointly when the child is not my husband's dependant? Is my refund going to be affected greatly? Does one of us still file as head of household?

I've thought about starting a foundation to help break the cycle of poverty in the inner cities.

The vision is a foundation to host academic competions for inner-city youths with cash 'gifts' for the best academic performance on some sort of standardized tests. Would this be considered gifts or earnings by the IRS? Ideally I don't want to ask folks for social security numbers and mess with all the paper work etc.; but staying legal is, of course, top priority.

How can I minimize my taxes? 100K single 21-year-old student Question Details:I'll make between 100K and 200K from a business this year and am a university student living in Ontario. I'm also wondering about the best long-term tax strategy, since I'll be making over 500K for several of the coming years. Can someone answer this in 3 parts?
1. What's the best tax strategy just this year?
2. What's the best strategy for the coming years (e.g. move the business to the Caymen islands, etc.?)
3. What's the best strategy I should take considering where I'm going financially?

A big thanks to whoever can answer this question, and IF YOU’RE AN ACCOUNTANT LEAVE YOUR EMAIL and I may call you about doing taxes if your answer sounds well thought-out!

My boyfriend and I are having a baby in March and would like to be married beofre our baby is born. We both make about 25,000 a year. I was wondering whether we should wait until after Jan. 1st to get married so we don't have to file a joint tax return or because our incomes are relatively low it would not matter. We are going to get married either way just curious if there is any reason we should wait.

I have a full time job and make about $40,000 a year. Me and my wife have a daughter together and got married last June. My wife also has a full time job. The W-4 form has always confused me and I just want to be sure that we don't end up owing the IRS at the end of the year. What would be the best way to fill out our forms?

I am having a bit of an issue, my NY tax preparer has been doing my taxes since 2000, I live in another state as of 4 years ago. What happened was that I got my taxes looked at by a NJ account he came up with a larger number of return than my NY preparer, I feel the NJ IRS laws are so different that a NJ tax preparer would know more and get me a better deduction from NY, now what would you do? and how should I tell him?

me and my boyfriend make about 31,000 each. we are considering getting married, but think it will mess up our tax refund, meaning, we would get less.

also, i'm about 7 months pregnant, so from a financial (no moral) perspective, would it be better to get married and file joint or remain single.

also, i make too much money (i know, sad isnt it) for financial assistance, daycare assistance. so that sucks. i'm breast feeding throughout 12 months, so not in need of formula yet, but will be if my son doesnt take to the teet. please help!
