I've heard that if you save your tickets; then win more than 600.00, you can present the old tickets to show that you spent X amount of dollars to reach that win. Does anybody know how this works? Is it deducted when you claim your prize or when we pay our annual taxes? (or is it even true)

What if the government decided to raise our taxes in order to support more social programs?
And if you make more than 150 grand a year as income, you have to pay a higher tax rate?
What are the pro's and con's of this?
What would you do?

I just asked the secretary of our accountant that prepared our 2006 Tax Returns if he had a copy of our taxes, becasue we didnt have them for some reason and she said it she wasnt sure if I could have them because that would be a very "Complicated sensitive process." and she would have to get back to me. Is this true?

We bought the house together, title is under both of our name (single man and single woman). But her credit is much better than mine so the mortgage was sole under her name. We both pay the mortgage together (with our join account). My question is, will I be able to claim the mortgage interest for my tax deduction? how about property tax? It is very important since we both work and our real estate agent told us that we both can claim it. However, I am not sure if we can trust our agent with that information. Please help~ Thanks

Is their any tax benefit(s) by providing 100 percent support to family members?
After a failed marriage and health problems, I agreed to let my sister in law and her 8 year old daughter live with us until they got back on their feet. They had absolutely nothing. No home, no car, no money and a dead beat dad/ex-husband that we can’t locate.
I was happy to be able to help after all it is my wife’s sister and our niece. However, the expense has really taken a toll, increased utilities, food, etc. It has been 1 1/2 yrs and she has had no luck getting decent job and no signs of making progress. I claimed them the first year as dependants on my taxes but it seems I am missing something here. Any additional advise?

I am single mom to a 2 yr old. My ex has no contact with our daughter, but he does pay support. I work full-time and go to college full-time and pay childcare costs. Should I claim 2 or just 1. Also, does anyone know what I would get back since I do pay all child care costs. Would support factor into any of this? Thanks!

Well, here is my situation. I am not married yet, but living with my g'f and our dog, Charlie.
We divide the bills, and we have no children. I do not pay child support or get food stamps or social security or any types of support.
I get confused about questions like the head of household question.. here are the questions..

Enter “1” for yourself if no one else can claim you as a dependent

Enter “1” if: You are single and have only one job; or You are married, have only one job, and your spouse does not work; or your wages from a second job or your spouse’s wages (or the total of both) are $1,000 or less.

Enter number of dependents (other than your spouse or yourself) you will claim on your tax return

Enter “1” if you will file as head of household on your tax return

I work as an independent contractor, and basically use my vehicle as my office. Since my job requires me to travel each day, I keep a majority of my work related items in my vehicle. Unfortunately, this included receipts I have accumulated over the past few years. This past weekend, I visited a friend and noticed that my driver's side window was forced down when I returned to my car. A few items were removed (e.g., CD player face, CD wallet, workshirts, etc.) that I could easily replace. I did not realize that my box of receipts that included thousands of dollars in tax-applicable expenses was taken as well. Many of those receipts consisted of work-related expenditures made payable in cash... What should I do?? If I am eventually audited, I have little in way of proof for my write-offs... I really do not draw cash from the bank, as my cash spending over the last years has come from me selling off personal effects (mainly my old CD and vinyl record collection). Should I call the IRS?

My husband and I got married a year ago and filed our income jointly this year. Before I got married I used to get back a hefty sum back from the IRS, because I do not declare any dependents. This year we had to send the IRS $5000 just because we got married. Anyway, time went by quickly, we haven't changed anything in the way we pay our taxes. On top of that, I got good bonuses this year and so did my husand. I am fearing that they are going to panalize us this year because we probably end up owing more. BTW, we do not really have a significant income on my husband's side because most of his income goes to his ex wife (Alimony). How do I check our accurate current situation? Can I do it myself without an accountant? I do not want to contant the IRS. I dont want to "wake the bear up" if I don't have to.
Financially, getting married doesn't make sense!!
