I received a bonus from work and have £3000 available to invest. Rather than just putting it into a cash ISA I am considering opening an online sharedealing account and investing in shares.

However, even the cheapest online brokers charge a flat fee of around £8-10 per trade.

I don't mind a moderate degree of risk, but I get the feeling that after trading fees are deducted I will struggle to beat the performance of a tracker fund or even a normal savings account even if I make good stock selections (and this is by no means guaranteed!)

Is there a general rule of thumb for the mimimum amount of money that a private investor should have before they consider investing directly in the stock market? Should I just stick with a cash savings account, or possibly tracker / mutual funds?

How does the rise in Interest Rates affect the prices of Shares?
Do they increase of decrease? Is now a good time in investing in shares or when the interest rates go up more? Or is it very individual to a particular company?

For example, I purchased a call at $1 with with a $40 strike price with 6 months before expiration and the current underlying stock price per share that is say $25.
Say in 3 months the stock ramps up to $35 and the option is now worth $5. I decided to sell in the in 3 months before chancing a decline with 3 months left.
When I sell, does the clearing house have to purchase it back? Is the writer of the call obligated to pay even if it never hit the strike price? Or is it market makers purchasing the option?
I just do not understand this point in technically who is paying me off in this type of example as I rarely wait it out until I have lost all time value?
Thank you in advance!!

I know it seems stupid, but I heard there was one fund that you can buy shares and basically you'll be investing in a way that follows warren buffet and get maybe 18-20% return less than Warren Buffet, but more than you would have done on your own. Is it true?

my friend and i are pooling money between guys in our school. so far guys have pledged a grand total of $10,000. my friend says that by day trading copper or silver and selling for a 10 cent profit per share, over the period of a year and a half, our $10,000 will increase to over $100,000. we do have the ability to trade commission free but we do have to pay some sort of note (im not sure what, but is around $30 per sell) but even with this advantage, my friends predictions seem way too optimistic. we would be making these kinds of trades in the ballpark of 5-10 times a week for about a year and a half. what are the problems with this get rich quick scheme? it seems too good to be true for how simple he describes it. i havent been able to argue with him b/c i dont know enough yet. please explain the risks and what we need to do to make this work so this doesnt blow up in our faces. thanks

I lost money in the money market and I know that there is someone that you can contact regarding your loss, I have tried to find out from several sources only to be led in the wrong direction.
I have seen advertisement regarding this matter and I have researched this only to find out that this advertisement was not for the state of Alabama but was for other states, I have also tried contacting some of the Money Management Companies here in my city but it seems that no one know 's who I need to contact.
I know for a fact that the people who took such a loss in the money market are getting some of their funds back due to the companies that were handling the stocks and fund's did not have their clients best interest at heart and many people lost a lot of money because of the improper handling of the funds by their investors. I am trying to help my husband out with this due to it was his money that was lost and he is only wanting what is rightfully his. Help him if you can, Please!
