There’s something about it I’m not happy with. I already have an idea what it is and how to fix it. But I thought you guys might want to add your two cents worth. Also, do you think the message is a little too subtle?

The colors are much more vivid in real life but my stupid digital camera doesn’t know this. Hopefully, you’ll get the general idea. and, as always, you can click on the image to enlarge it.

Thanks for any input and please be honest.

Description: old man (looks like a scholar) pointing to a page in an open book as student next to him smiles and looks at book. Next to them is a tan globe with what appears to be a lamb constellation on it. Student's hand rests on globe. Both people are in shadows with a distinct ray of light against their faces-- Caravaggio style. Old man is possibly Eratosthenes.

Trust me, I tried. And I wasted half an afternoon and a lot of paint and couldn't get it right. I came close to the right color, but couldn't get the 'sheen' or 'sparkle' from my blended paints.

It pisses me off when I have to admit there are some things I simply can't do. After fighting my ego I finally I gave up and headed to Dick Blick's and bought a jar of the stupid stuff. Both Liquitex and Golden have 'Gold' paint, but it ain't cheap. Still, it was cheaper than wasting paint trying to get the right effect.

So, in case the need should ever arise again, how would you mix the right colors (with acrylics) to get the shinny gold effect?

I have inherited two small oil paintings by this artist and can find no record of him/her. I think it is either a Victorian or Edwardian artist. Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
