Mehmet the Conqueror took Constantinople in 1453 after battering the walls with his cannon. Some books say that afterwards, he rebuilt the walls.
I used to live in Istanbul and work in the old city near where the successful assault was made. A guide book said that for that reason, the section of walls in that area are in the most ruinous condition. I had a look and it was true. In other stretches there were plenty of massive walls and towers, but in the assault area - just south of Edirne Kapi - just bits and pieces. So how could Mehmet have had them rebuilt?
I also know that about that time the style of fortification changed from high walls and towers because they were vulnerable to cannon - as shown by the Fall of Constantinople. So wouldn't it have been a bit stupid to builod them again in the same style?

When the west was being settled millions of buffalo were slaughtered for their fur. The carcasses were left to rot on the prairie and they talk of virtual mountains of buffalo bones. All of the millions upon millions of huge furs were made into coats, blankets, hats, saddles and so on. My question is: Why then isn’t every antique store in America overflowing with buffalo fur items? I see old cloths and hats and woven blankets dating back three hundred years and more, but I’ve yet to run across a buffalo skin coat. Where did all the Buffalo go?

If you know alot about this topic, I'd love to hear. Especially about why and how it evolved the way it did. How it is different from post-medieval Islamic architecture and so on...

IF YOU CAN put up multiple links with pictures, that would also be great.

I'm not looking for any specific answer on this question, just an answer that teaches me--the more, the better.

I read today about the island of St Kilda in the Hebrides and its tragic breakdown in self efficiency. In 1930 those that remained on the island asked for evacuation to the mainland. If something similar happened now what would you take as a 'reminder of the past'?
