I think a 'generation' is considered about 20 years, which may be different from a 'cohort'. There may be more than one cohort in a single generation or a cohort may extend across generations.
The terms, 'generation x', 'generation y', 'lost generation' 'baby-boomers', 'baby-busters' may be considered more of cohorts even though some of these span the length of a generation thereby viewed as such.

A "generation" is usually 20-25 years.
Here are some names I remember from American History:
Lost Generation (1920s)
Greatest Generation (1930s-40s) coined by Tom Brokaw
Baby Boomers (1946-1964)
Generation X
Generation Y

The 80s were Generation X, just count backwards in the alphabet from that. I'm sure that's how it works.
