All childhood records show the name hes used for 56 years, only after new laws that he had to go get a certified birth copy and not the one his mother gave him did he find the descrepency. Mothers deceased and never knew father, so no way to find out why she would have erased his real last name and registered him even for school as a kid with this other name. Hes always just used the birth certificate that his mother had which was a photo copy. Seems she originally used her last name, but gave him sorta 2 middle names: then for whatever reason erased her last name from his and hes been using the names left because thats what was listed and hes always been recognized as even in grade school. example- John david martin smith....she erased the smith
and enrolled him as John david martin. Hes never known any other name, I married him as John david martin...28 years later we find the situation. We are both in shock. Is he legally Martin or Smith? Can we just drop the smith and be ok ?

Found an ancestor on the 1861 UK census, but it shows him as the son of parents who have a different surname. They have another son who is older and has their surname, so my guy is not from a second marriage. I'm guessing adoption, but would have thought he'd have changed surname at time of adoption. Was it common/normal to keep original surname after adoption? Anyone have other ideas or similar experiences that might explain it?

Many thanks.

Each of us has two parents [well apart from Immaculate Conceptions of which only one is historically recorded]

and each of us has four grandparents for the same reason.

So for each generation we go back we double the number of ancestors at that generation?

GEN1(1944) 1: me, you, anybody
GEN2(1909) 2. parents
GEN3(1876) 4. grandparents
GEN4(1842) 8. great-grandparents
GEN5(1813) 16. great-great-
GEN6 32.
GEN7 64.
GEN8 128.
See where this is going?
GEN16. 32,728
My ancestors trace back 30 generations in Ireland and we can track about 5 more back through Wales, England to Normandy around the time of the Norman Invasion of England in 1066.
GEN32. is actually 2 to the power of 31 ancestors
which considerably more than the whole population (at that time) of the British Isles and France.

Have I that many ancestors?
Has biology failed me?
Or Maths?
Or logic?

I have been thinking about legally changing my name. No, I am not getting married, divorced, or getting a sex change- I am doing it for other personal reasons. Since I feel this is a serious thing, I wanted to know if anyone out there has had experience with it. I have researched it somewhat and still have more to do. ALSO- does anyone know the last name: Legna ? I was wondering what the geneology or heritage of it was. Thanks!

My husband has very little knowledge of his extended family. I know this bothers him at times. I would love to find out some things for him and try to get some kind of family tree going for him.
