The American Heritage dictionary defines genealogy like this: 1) A record or table of the descent of a person, family, or group from an ancestor or ancestors; a family tree.
2) Direct descent from an ancestor; lineage or pedigree.
3) The study or investigation of ancestry and family histories.
In our modern world, when someone speaks about an interest in genealogy they probably are referencing a personal catalog of the people from whom they directly descend, whether through blood lines, adoption or marriage. This, as you might imagine, can result after many years of research, into a list of thousands of people. My personal family tree exceeds 3,000 individuals and dates back prior to 1620. My interests are in my United States ancestors, but other people investigating their family may stretch their tree by adding information from other distant world-wide relations or may limit their tree. There is a world of good, free information on the Internet. Here are some excellent sources:

Geneology is the science of your ancestors. It is about researching your roots and those in your family that have come before you. It's your family history.
