I was hoping someone could help me with this, either confirm or deny my research on my Italian last name, "Marotta." I know the "-otta" derives from the Latin "octavia" meaning eighth, which I assumed was created from the gens Octavia (not to say of the same bloodline, of course, but I can dream can't I :P).

As for the "Mar," does it derive from the Italian "Moro" (Latin "Maur"), meaning from North Africa? This would make sense to me, because I am of North Western Sicilian heritage (Palermo/Panormus to be exact), and this region in ancient days was settled by the Carthaginians...from North Africa.

If have ANY insight please let me know! Or if you can guide me somewhere that can give me more info.

I am part Mohegan we believe from family letters, but need a database of names from the mid-to-late 1800s & early 1900's to reference or a contact with that tribe's records. Their Reservation is in CT.

Does anyone here know where the name comes from? I read some place that it's a Basque. But, a friend who's Basque tells me that it's the first time that he's encountered the name (but he's heard of someone named Gaviota). Although, I've read people who're Basque with that same last name. It's difficult for me to do a "Family Tree" since a lot of my relatives are dead.

OK well I'm doing my Family Tree Searching. and I'm kinda Stumped. The Surname is Dempel and I'm not sure if that is how it is spelled in English or if that was how it was spelled in German.

I'm wanting to know how it is spelled so that I can search more successfully.

*Example* My Grandma said her Surname was Muller and then I looked into that and I found out that it is Spelled Mullerova.

Thanks in Advance.
