Does anyone know a site which gives information about the origins of specific surnames? Im not looking for specific lineage, just country, region, language, etc...

Hey Ottomated,

The Swyrich.com entry below does a good job sometimes, exactly of what you are looking for.

By finding true ancestors is the best way. People with the same surname in LDS Family Search is a great way, except when they are all over the globe. You can just look for the oldest dates in the results of a search from that site, and it will get you close.

Another thing you can do is DNA testing in a Family Tree DNA surname project. That gets very precise, as long as your branch of the name has other participants that did their Genealogy homework.

Here are the easy sites to use, and at the bottom the DNA stuff.

About.com seems to have some good information here. I looked briefly through a few names, and it seems to have what you're looking for. It is, however, pretty basic. If you want more info on the names, you'll probably have to click through the links they provide. It also is limited on the number of names listed.
