On both sides of the aisle, this issue only seems to pop up as an election year issue. And both sides use it to their advantage -- the Republicans that are against Gay Marriage go for the Christian conservative votes, and the Democrats that support it go for the homosexual and liberal votes.
And then, after the election, the issue seemingly gets put away, at least on the national visibility level. The last time the Amendment came up in Congress was 2004, and was such a hot button issue that it was immediately tabled after the election. It was reintroduced again in June 2006, just in time for the campaigns to get rolling and the debate restarted.
It just seems to me that it's a transparent "decoy" that politicians from both sides use to manipulate/motivate their base. Nothing more.
