On both sides of the aisle, this issue only seems to pop up as an election year issue. And both sides use it to their advantage -- the Republicans that are against Gay Marriage go for the Christian conservative votes, and the Democrats that support it go for the homosexual and liberal votes.

And then, after the election, the issue seemingly gets put away, at least on the national visibility level. The last time the Amendment came up in Congress was 2004, and was such a hot button issue that it was immediately tabled after the election. It was reintroduced again in June 2006, just in time for the campaigns to get rolling and the debate restarted.

It just seems to me that it's a transparent "decoy" that politicians from both sides use to manipulate/motivate their base. Nothing more.

They could give a damn about gays or anything else unless they could use it as you said.

I think Clinton is a big part of this he went after demographics no one cared about. I remember him meeting with gay/lesbian magazines various minorty groups etc like no other president. I think Clinton was at least a sincere nice/good person. You could just read it.

The problem with this is that the negative people have this system worked to it's fullest.

Democrats want to appeal to homosexuals for their vote??? You sure could have foold me!!!

The issue of gay marriage gets attention because people DO care about it. Look at the fact that every single state in which the voters have had an opportunity to vote on whether or not it should be legal have instead voted in favor of the traditional, common-law definition of marriage. The issue of gay marriage gets attention because of the rulings by state courts (first in Hawaii and then in Massachusetts) and because of the fear that possibly the federal courts will also rule in favor of it.

It is not a "transparent decoy." I completely reject that.

It is the same with eveything else. Bush has been a virtual whirlwind in doing 180's! He even got gas prices lowered. Lower gas prices will only last until after the election! Wonder how much of our reserve he used?

Well I was deeply saddened to hear about the Catholic Charities and Archdiocese of Washington DC, since I was a former donor. I say former donor because they will never receive another cent from me. I say any church that tries to deny the civil rights of others should have their tax exemption status taken away and I hope that donors to Catholic Charities of Boston and Washington DC will find a worthy charity to donate their money to.

Yes, it's an election issue, just like legalizing/decriminalizing/medical marijuana.
