I will be interviewing in downtown San Francisco next Friday. I intend to take BART into the city. However, the best location is still 30 minutes or so from where the interview will take place.

I'm concerned about the rain and the fact that I really want to make sure the interview goes well (I don't need to fall and get dirty or rip my pants or cut my hands, etc.)

What's the best way to hail a taxi in SF? Call a company? Stand on the sidewalk and wave like a tourist? Jump out in front of a car? My only experience was in Boston, and I know calling a company was useless there. I found that walking down the sidewalk with a huge piece of luggage did the trick, but I won't have luggage here.

I've never taken MUNI before (parents had a thing against it, don't know why), and would not want to possibly risk being late. I would also prefer to be dropped off AT the interview location. Suggestions?

i've heard theres a murder every week and many drivebys near the freeway. is it really that horrible? or is it just parts of Oakland? does it effect the cities nearby, like Emeryville?

We're planning a week-long trip to CA in early May. Primarily wanting to visit San Fran & Napa. Having never been to either city before, we are welcoming recommendations for lodging, dining, activities, must-see wineries, etc. Particularly interested in anything off the beaten path. We'd like to fly in to San Fran, stay 2 days, then drive up to Napa for 4 days. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

We are thinking of moving up there and not too familiar with the area. Are there any suburbs? We want a suburb, family oriented area and close to S.F. Also, a place where it's not too expensive to rent. Thanks!

My husband is going to be starting Berkeley business school in the fall so we have to move to SF from NYC.

I have been dying to get a place with a yard, I'm so sick of being cramped up in a tiny NYC apartment.

The only rental houses with yards that I can find for under $2,000/month close to Berkeley are in Oakland. Is that a safe area?

It doesn't have to be pristine, I've lived on the South Side of Chicago for 5 years and in East Harlem in NYC for 4 years without incident but I'm worried about drive-bys. LOL I know that sounds so dumb and stereotypical but I know nothing about Oakland or the Bay Area!

I was offered a job in the Bay Area and I really want to take it. I think it will be a great opportunity (better than what I could have in Texas, I believe). I would be getting an 18% salary increase but in Texas we do NOT have a state tax so I guess with the CA state tax, I'm really only getting a 10% raise. Real estate here is literally 289% less than CA. My house here costs about $250K...in the Bay Area it would go for $1Million (which makes me laugh and cry at the same time).

I currently own a nice house in a great neighborhood so I'm really freaked out about selling my house (giving up my hard earned equity) and going back to renting (and paying double that of my mortgage payment).

So if you had a nice house would you sell it to go back to renting in the most expensive area of the country (and having a significantly smaller place) if you thought the job opportunity was great?

Also, is it possible to SAVE money living in the Bay Area? This is consuming me, seriously...
