They shut it down because it was old and expensive to maintain. It's part of the national park system now I believe. You can board a ferry and take a tour. There's a good PBS special on its history.

Many reasons, but you should rent the dvd "Murder in the First"
It not only is a great film but is a huge reason the prison was shut down.
