Ghirardelli Chocolates
Boudin Sourdough Bread
San Francisco themed trinkets and postcards from Chinatown or Fisherman's Wharf
Rice-A-Roni was the San Francisco treat, but is now manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Boxes of the stuff still depict the SF Cable Car.
Tie Dyed San Francisco themed T-Shirts depicting the Height Ashbury "flower power" days in the 60's.
A CD of Tony Bennett's "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" at any record store.
Authentic "San Francisco" Chop Suey in Chinatown. The recipe was never invented in Asia.....
SF Fortune Cookies!!!!! Visit the actual factories (I think there are two open to the public in Chinatown) and purchase them for less than a regular supermarket.
Hope this helps!

Depends what you are interested in. If it's foods & cooking, there are many ethnic food stores. Some sell cooking utensils, too. We have interesting coop owned health food stores: Rainbow Groceries in the Mission District is quite large and then Other Avenues Food Store on Judah St. near 44th Ave. in the Outer Sunset District There are other good ones, I am sure. They sell interesting merchandise (books, little boxes, shoulder bags, Tshirts, etc. for keeping or gifts as well. Kind of Hippy stuff.
Speaking of Hippy: The Haight Ashbury area would be interesting to visit if you are interested in CD's. DVD's, or old records (music or videos, new & old) at Amoeba Records near Stanyon St. It's a huge former bowling alley filled with stuff and fun to browse for movies & music. The workers and other patrons are very nice & if you need help the staff are knowledgeable.

If you want to poke around in newer trendier shopping areas, try Hayes Valley..... near Hayes/Octavia St.
Secret too is that Clement St. In the Richmond is better than Chinatown, just not as great for photos, but better chinese food and better shops.
Try Kamei on Clement St. for great Japanese Dish gift sets (tea sets or sushi sets) a lot of these are compact for your travel and beautiful. Clement is near Golden Gate park so you can site-see over there next or head to Japantown or Haight St. for more shopping.
Haight St. has a lot of hip shops for more skateboard type personalities.
Another option is to stroll up and down Fillmore St. between Post and Clay (marc jacobs outlet etc..)
And last Union Street. Union between Scott and Green has lots of shops and restaurants (Bebe, Express etc...)

Absolutely, go to Chinatown during the day! This is where several movies were shot, and it is so much fun! Eat dim sum for breakfast / lunch.
There are so many fun stores to see, and you can bring home small, inexpensive, but interesting items, as well as shop for jewelry. In Chinatown, the jewelry prices shown are not necessarily the prices they will be willing to sell to you, so you can negotiate a good price for a beautiful lavender jade ring, etc.

Ghirardelli coffee and chocolates! Though these are available all over the country, ghirardelli brand is synonymous to the city San Francisco! And don't miss taking home souvenirs of cable cars - statistics show that cable car is one of the primary reasons that made SFO a top tourist destination.

In Ghiradelli square there used to be a little Salvation Army shop in the corner top row that sold little fur mice in different and intricate costumes. I used to live there and collected a few of them as a kid. I don't know if they're still there but they were sort of a traditional SF craft. Also, the foldable paper Japanese fans on black metal frames at the Hokoni Gardens (Japanese garden). Enjoy your trip!

Go to Good Vibrations, a unique sex store for ladies. Also, if you have time go to the Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield and buy a big bag of "Belly Flops" (reject jelly beans).
