Its 50. Despite what you may have read 80 closes far more frequently than 50. The reason is that more people use 80 and therefore there are more accidents in the winter.

50 is the most direct route.

The storm this weekend is going to be a warm storm with snow levels 7000' and above, so 50 should be fine.

Remember if you ever are traveling ac cross the Sierra carry chains this time of year it can save you a a lot of trouble.

If weather conditions are good, take highway 80 east bound to highway 50 in sacramento. 50 will take you right into south lake tahoe.

However, take note that high way 50 is the first to close if there is bad weather. We are expecting a very wet storm to be coming through the bay area at the end of the week. So if 50 closes, you will need to take 80 to Truckee and then cut across to Kings Beach and take that route instead.

50, b/c it's the most direct route there. If you drive 80 then try to drive from the north shore to south shore you have to go all the way around the eastern side of the lake during winter and it will take you at least an hour.

When it rains in SF, the weather system moves eastward and becomes snow when it gets to the Sierra Nevada mountains. During the show season when he expected challenging road conditions, my husband always left our house in SF at around 8 am (unfortunately that was also commute hour), timing his arrival in the mountains as close to high noon as possible to avoid black ice.

It's raining outside now, here in SF. But I don't know if that means snow in Tahoe in a few hours.
