I am going to Vancouver (from Hong Kong) for a family wedding and am bringing a watch and a piece of jewelry as gifts. Will I have to pay customs at the airport... in which case, could it be cheaper to buy these gifts after I arrive?

So i live in california and would like to see real winter beauty via whistler and vancouver area. When would be the best time during winter, when it is not crazy cold (I visited toronto before during the 2nd week of december'05 and it was around -35F and at one time even hit -40F), to go and visit whistler? originally planned to go around january. Thanks!

I know that you can't find a greener place anywhere than there; just imagine the green lands ranging from British Columbia to the Evergreen State of Washington, passing by the shiny green coastal line of Oregon till the Redwood Forests of Northern California! Wow!

Also this region must be the cleanest part of earth; both in the streets and buildings, and climatically. The weather is very moderate throughout the whole year, and the people are educated, religiously tolerant (even it has the highest percentages of atheists, agnostics, homo's, bi's, etc).

We must not forget the civillized people and their physical fitness too!

However, I never knew what this region actually lacks: Are the universities there that good? What about the restaurants and places of entertainment? Do people there wish moving to places like NYC, LA, Chicago, Toronto and Montreal? What is it that you miss and you can't find in the Pacific Northwest?

Thinking about moving there. I'm from So Cal.

Hi all, well i am planning to take admission in a college at Vancouver for higher studies. Since this is my first time i am a bit tensed and at the same time excited too. I have so many question for which i need someone who can answer me.
1.) How much will it cost for me to rent a shared flat/other housing unit, in Yaletown/ anywhere in West Hastings Street.
2.) Where can i get my food from? I cant goto restaurants daily? Are there some services that provides food for students and also dilivers it to students door and charges weekly/monthly/whatever? Or i will have to cook my food on my own?
3.) What are the taxi charges per mile within city.
4.) If i buy a bicycle. Can i bike it all over the city or to just some restricted areas? Will i require a special permit/licence, for it?
5.) How safe is the city. Coz my classes are of 18 hrs a day and i will be returning late hrs and then back early hrs to the classes.
6.) Which one amongst theTaxi/Buses/Tubes/Bicycles/Walk, is the best

We plan to take one of the cruises from Vancouver to Alaska. Coming from the east coast of the US, we are thinking of taking the train to Seattle, WA and then the bus to Vancouver. I suspect this dumps you in the middle of town, so what's the best way to get to the boats? About how far is it and how much would it cost by either mass transport or taxi?

I live in Vancouver and at night I see 4 strong beams of light that circle a portion of the sky over and over again. They come together and move apart. The shape of the light is circular, and it most visible during cloudy, overcast nights. The lights are visible all the way into the sky, so they must be very strong. I'm just wondering where they are coming from?
