Depending on whether you are traveling in early or later in May, there is some possibility of still running into icy or snowy conditions in the mountains, although most likely you will have little trouble, especially if you travel during the day.

This would be the consideration of making your travel, the road conditions in the mountains. Generally, in May, while there are some cool temps still, snow and ice is less an issue in the mountain passes.

May is a hard month to predict. Some years its gorgeous and warm, and other years (like this past May) it rains. If I recall, this past year there were huge dumps of snow in the Coquihala well into June. so, if you're driving from Calgary, plan to bring chains for the tires, winter clothing as well as summer clothing.

For the record, I personally find the Coquihala (# 5 between Kamloops and Hope) to be far more unpredictable in terms of weather than even the #1 through the Rockies. It's a gorgeous drive, just be prepared.
