55% of Americans don't believe in evolution.

That doesn't bother me much, because I know that at least 55% of Americans are ignorant on most subjects, but they know enough to do their jobs and manage their own lives.
I'm more worried about the 45% who claim to believe in evolution. I wonder what percentage of them are just taking the word of authorities. How many of them have approached the subject with proper scientific scepticism? For instance, in high school biology, we were taught about carbon-14 dating, but when I asked why carbon-14 didn't decrease in the atmosphere, the teacher didn't know. (Answer: Cosmic rays continuously replenish it by converting nitrogen to C-14). Without that additional explanation, the whole theory of C-14 dating is nonsense. Evolution is sometimes taught more like religion than science.
