Other European countries have national costumes, feast days, days of celebration; the Scots celebrate Hogmanay, Burns Night; the Irish celebrate St Patrick's Day even in Trafalgar Square. Even the Americans have Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Hallowe'en (we have a very pale imitation). Here, St George's Day goes virtually unnoticed; there are no national celebrations - apart from, perhaps, local villagey ones, and all we do at Christmas is start buying in August and then overeat and get drunk. Is it the fault of the Industrial Revolution? The Break with Rome that we have no Saints' Days?

Why do Christian's allow their children to "celebrate" All Hallow's Eve? It has roots in Pagan beliefs.
And why is it okay for that one day of the year that children are allowed to ring on stranger's doorbells and ask for candy? When the other 364 days of the year, we tell them it is bad.

Just looking for real people's opinions and thoughts, there is no right or wrong answer here.

I am a guy and I am in an area where I don't know very many people. I could have friends that can come from 2 hours away, so it will have to be their while, and should I make it where I can have people under 21 there?

This is Calvin. My favorite holidays for the year are Christmas and Thanksgiving. I am just curious about what are your favorite holidays? I am not asking irrelevant question b/c it is not Christmas nor Thanksgiving day yet.

Christmas is celebrated in U.S. But my question is how is Christmas celebrated differently in contrast with U.S. (any countries on Earth)?

Tomorrow it's St. John's day. In my city, Porto, it is a holiday and tonight we have a really great party. I know the same happens in Braga (farther to the north of Portugal).

I want to know where else. I read it is also a holiday in Catalunya (or is it just in Barcelona?) and Québec, right? I want to know who of you live in cities/regions/countries where tomorrow is a holiday and tonight you have a big St. John's night festival.

My mam booked me a surprise weekend away with a few friends(fri-sun) for next week and only told me today. I've already had my 2 summer weeks off on holiday in Greece. But my manager has always said that i should ask a month in advance for time off. What will i say? The truth? Make something up? My mams already paid for it, and i really wanna go!

yeah he has'nt done anything. But he can't,because you guys have jobs.Half of us don't have jobs or we don't make good money. Its hard being black now and it was then. But you white peope say your working and stuff, thats the point you have jobs.We can't get jobs because people judge us.And half of our race is kinda stupid, but people judge that side of our race then judge us.If you think were doing the same to you white people, then good!Because now you know how we feel. And why should there be an asian, jewlrish, white, european, native and other culture history months.Yall haven't done anything, but i do think there should be a mexican history month.i think they diserve amonth instead of a day.Hey god, mexicans, and black people made it more of a civilized nation.

much like African Americans?
http://yennadon.sd42.ca/online/socials/Chinatown/slaves.html

And for that matter, should the Native Americans have a History Month dedicated to them since they were here first?

I am just asking because this other guy on here is so angry about why people would question the whole concept of a month dedicated to one race. Why not celebrate and educate all cultures and races all year long?We are the melting pot of the world after all.

If your an culture besides white people, then hear this. The only reason why we have a black history month is because we had people take a stand and say,i wanna celebrate my history and they would'nt rest till the goverment let it be.See thats exacly what im talking about,we stood up and fought.Yall's ancestors did'nt fight,if the govorment said no yall just walked away.WHITE people what can you celbrate your ancestors did nothing but treat us like ****!So why should you guys diserve a month?Any way most white people get everything they want, every single day of the year is a white persons day.Us blacks are still fighting for our rights, yeah we fought for our freedom. But now we want our right and credit for everything we did.If it was'nt for us White people would'nt be so high class.Us blacks fought for everbody. And we just don't get credit.Martin Luther King,Jr would still be sad.
