Tomorrow it's St. John's day. In my city, Porto, it is a holiday and tonight we have a really great party. I know the same happens in Braga (farther to the north of Portugal).

I want to know where else. I read it is also a holiday in Catalunya (or is it just in Barcelona?) and Québec, right? I want to know who of you live in cities/regions/countries where tomorrow is a holiday and tonight you have a big St. John's night festival.

It is catholic in its origin, of course, but nowadays, although the image of St. John is sometimes used for decoration, there's barely anything religious about it, at least in my city. It's just a night-long party all over the streets of the city, with music, beer, fireworks and a lot of fun! For all of you who never heard about St. John's Day, you should come by sometime! :o)

We celebrate St. John's in Malta. It's not a public holiday, in our tradition huge bonfires are lit. This tradition goes back to when the Knights of St. John were in Malta, and since it was the feast of their patron saint.

I have always celebrated June 24, St. John's Day, because it is my birthday! I'm envious of your celebration in Porto! But I think it would be wonderful to plan to celebrate my birthday in Porto someday!
