I am having a birthday party both inside and outside for my daughter on Christmas Eve during the day. The forecast on the weather channel says scattered showers. The forecast in my local newspaper for that day says mostly cloudy. How accurate are these forecasts?

As far as I'm aware, raindrops (or precipitation I guess) fall when clouds condense enough. I guess at its most basic level, the clouds get too heavy to hold the vapour and at that point, they condense, turn to liquid water, and fall to the ground. If that's the case, why do they fall at different times for different lengths of time and come in different sizes?

I've just been wondering how it all works. Does it have something to do with the molecules in the air speeding up or slowing down? I think that it's the suns distance that has an effect on it, but what does it have an effect on exactly?
