The book defines definition as

a partition of an interval [a, b] on the real line is a finite sequence of the form

a = x0 < x1 < x2 < ... < xn = b.

So does this basically mean that a partition of interval [a,b] is a subinterval within [a,b]?

in others words, does it mean an interval within an interval?

Identify the standard form of the equation that correctly represents each problem. (Since some solutions will be complex, you should not solve them.)

Matching:
1) The square of a number is less than the number. Find the number.

2) The product of two consecutive integers is 6. Find the numbers.

3) The area and perimeter of a rectangle are numerically equal. Find the dimensions if the length is three more than the width.
-----
a. x^2 + x + 6 = 0
b. x^2 + x - 6 = 0
c. x^2 - x - 6 = 0
d. x^2 - x + 6 = 0

I have a word problem in algebra that I am just not getting. My instructor worked it out with me but I still dont understand....in WORDS....how the numbers were found. Can someone PLEASE help me?

The length of a rectangular field is 2 yards more than its width. Find the width if the area of the field is 120 yd2.
1. Explain why the answer of a width of –12 yards is unreasonable.
2. Give a reasonable answer in its place.
3. Explain why your answer is more reasonable.

L=W+2
L*W=AREA
(W+2)W=120
W^2+2W-120=0
(W+12)(W-10)=0
W+12=0
W=-12 YDS. NOT A VALID ANSWER.
W-10=0
W=10 YDS. THE VALID ANSWER FOR THE WIDTH
PROOF
L=10+2=12 YDS. FOR THE LENGTH.
PROOF
10*12=120
120=120

I have no clue where these numbers are coming from and my
instructor will not explain.

Found it in my homework packet. I used calculus, but I feel like using pre-cal this time =D!

So here's the problem:

"In figure above, the circle with center C and radius 5 is tangent to both the x and y axes. Line AB is tangent to the circle at point B. What is the slope of Line AB if point B is at (9, -8)?

The circle is at the 4th quadrant. You might want to draw it to do this.

How would you find the slope without calculus?

You might want the equation of the circle:

(x-5)^2 + (y+5)^2 = 25

Thanks!
