Several Symols sat silently and snacked on sugary sweets.
Well, and tea, too. But that would have ruined the alliteration.

Anyway, after tea, they decided to burrow out a larger burrow. In the first hour, they burrowed out 427 cubic inches of dirt. In the next hour, they burrowed out 256 cubic inches of dirt. In the third hour, they burrowed out 312 cubic inches of dirt. In the fourth hour, they burrowed out 546 cubic inches of dirt. In the fifth hour, they burrowed out 656 cubic inches of dirt. And in the sixth hour, they burrowed out 823 cubic inches of dirt. They continued for one more hour after that.

How many cubic inches, total, did they burrow in those seven hours?

Which is NOT a function?

Okay, so
it's not number one b/c no. 1 is a function. I put the equation in my calc. and on the graph, i got a line. so i did the vertical line test and it only passes it once- so it IS a function.

not no. 2 b/c tht is a function as well. same thing- put in calc. got a parabola- vert. line test- only pass once- IT IS A FUNCT.

not no. 3 because after i solved for Y. put in calc--same thing- vert line test- passed once- so it is a function...

no 4....i do not get how to solve for Y.....i did: ADD 3 on both sides...got x +3 = y^2 + 2y...then divided by 2, got x + 3 = y^2...square root that??????? can someone help me with tht IF i did it so far....

help....again, i am supposed to tell which is not a FUNCTION and WHY?

thanks !!!!!!!!! :)

I'm trying to figure out the pattern to find out what the next number would be. They are in cubic inches (if that helps; I'm not sure if that's needed or not to figure the pattern out).

Anyway, the numbers are:

427, 256, 312, 546, 656, 823, (next number here)

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out!! :D

The logistics map is the function f:[0,1] -> R, defined by f(x)=ax(1-x). Thus, x of n+1 = f(x of n) {Note, I say x of n+1 to represent x with the subscript n+1} and (x of n) = (x of 1, f(x of 1), f(f(x of 1)), ...). We write f^2(x) for f(f(x)), and so on.

Check that f has a global maximum of a/4 at x=1/2. Deduce that f maps [0,1] back into [0,1] if 0 <= x <= 4

From the above, we restrict ourselves to seeds, x of 1, from (0,1) and a epsilon (0,4). In fact the zone of a values in (0,1) is also not so interesting - the population is doomed to extinction.

Im having trouble with the deuce part. Thanks

If a graph has a vertical asymptote and the limit of the function is infinity or negative infinity on BOTH SIDES of the asymptote is there a way to know this just by the actual function. I know there's a way to differentiate this kind of graph from a graph that has one side going to infinity and another to negative infinity, I just don't know how. Thank you.
