I am thinkning adding a neg will be neg.

-b+5=-16
-b-5=-16-5
-b=-16-5
-b=-21
b=21

ok -b divided by -21 would bring a positive..giving 21.
-16-5 would be -21 the -b+5 -5 cancels the 5

-B+5=-16 Given
-5 -5 sbrct 5 frm bth sides (or u could ad 16, it dsnt mtr)
-B=-21
x-1 x-1 (do this because you dont want a negative variable)
B=21

your problem was that when you checked it, you thought that a neg. plus a neg. equals a positive, this is not true. i neg times a neg is a pos. and a neg devided by a neg is a pos, but a neg plus a neg isnt.

-16 plus 21 equals 5. ( just a dif way of checking it)

hope i could help a lil

-b + 5= -16 Minus 5 on both side to get the variable alone
-5 -5 When the signs are the SAME, add
-b= -21 -16 + (-5)= -21
b=21 You cannot have a negative variable so what
you do to one side you have to do to the other
When ADDING and SUBTRACTING
*Add when the signs are the same
*Subtract when the signs are different

When MULTIPLYING and DIVIDING
*Odd negatives make it negative
*Even negatives make it positive

-b+5= -16
I dont like negatives preceding variables, so move the b to the other side
5=b-16
now add 16 to both sides
b=21
where you messed up is you didnt solve for b. you solved for negative b. and so when you plugged it in it was doing the negative too many times. You did it all right, just the check was off.

You got -b = -21, so multiplying (or dividing) both sides of this by -1 gives b = 21, not -21. Plugging this into the original equation gives correct results.

- b + 5 = - 16
X by - 1
b - 5 = 16
b = 21 (because 21 - 5 = 16)
