You have to get the variable on one side of the equation only. Remember that you can add, subtract, multiply, or divide as much as you like, providing you do it to both sides of the equation.

8a-32=7a+10 so subtract 7a from both sides,
so
a - 32 = 10 so add 32 to both sides,
so
a = 42.

With
3x-10=2x+2
subtract 2x from both sides so
x-10 = 2
so add 10 to both sides so
x = 12
.

what you are trying to do is separate the numbers from the letters so that "all the numbers" = x or y or whatever the letter is.

the value of the letter changes with each equation too. Don't think that because x=3 in problem 1 that it has any bearing on problem 5. when you start solving for multiple variables, the letters will each have different values

Okay, the first step is to sort and move stuff to the right side of the equal sign. You move stuff from one side to the other by doing the opposite to it.

start 8a-32=7a+10
step 1 8a-7a=10+32

See how I moved the "a"s together by making 7a one side, -7a on the other side. -32 on one side becomes +32 on the other. The original goes away.

Then I add the things together on each side. 8a-7a is 1a or just a. 10+32=42; so a=42

answer a= 42

Next example
start 3x-10=2x+2
step 1 3x-2x=2+10
answer x = 12

You can check your answer by substituing the number you got back into the equation for the letter your are trying to solve for. so...

(3*12) - 10 =(2*12) +2
36 - 10 = 24+2
26 = 26

so you know the answer is right

what you are gonna need to do is move all teh a's to one side of the equal sign and move all the numbers to the other side

subtract 7a from both sides and add 32 to each side

a = 42

to make sure that the a is correct plug 42 into the equation for a

8(42) - 32 = 7(42) + 10
336 -32 = 294 + 10
304 =304

It checks out so a = 42

3x - 10 = 2x + 2

Do the same thing subtract 2x from each side and add 10

x = 12

Plug 12 in for x to make sure that it works out

3(12) - 10 = 2(12) +2
36 - 10 = 24 + 2
26 = 26

x = 12

Hope this helps

8a-32=7a+10
first subtract 7a from 8a, which is on the other side of the equation
a-32=10
now add 32 to 10, whichs on the other side of the equation
a=42
there you go! hope it helps! good luck!

8a-32=7a+10
-7 on both sides
a-32=10
+32 on both sides
a=42

3x-10=2x+2
-2x on both sides
x-10=2
plus 10 on both sides
x=12

GET X BY ITSELF.

^^^ Golden Rule :)

So, add the -10 from the left side, to the 2 on the right side.

So then you have 3x=2x+12

Then subtract the 2x from the right side, from the 3x on the left.

Then your left with x=12

x=12 is your answer.

Hope that helped.
